Welcome to my first post, where I outline goals for my journey to becoming a nuclear engineer.
For some time now, I have wanted to become a nuclear engineer because I believe in the potential of harnessing the energy contained in the atom and to use this energy for the betterment of everyone.
Starting today, in my spare time, everytime I learn a topic relating to this journey, I will end the session by writing about what was learnt and to share any questions or thoughts about the matter.
I do not want to complicate this because I don’t want to discourage myself from writing, since writing seems to help with understanding and organising thoughts and providing a purpose.
To end, I will take a snapshot of where I am now to better illustrate the current position.
I am a soon-to-be 26 year old man, living in northern Victoria, Australia.
I have a full-time job working as a warehouse storeperson in a tanker manufacturing facility.
I have attempted a few university courses prior to, and during, Covid-19. These were Bachelor in IT, Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and Advanced Diploma in Engineering. Each of these courses I have failed.
Upon stubborness, I believe I can become a nuclear engineer and that if I can keep trying, maybe I will achieve this dream.
Becoming a nuclear engineer in Australia really will set me up for 2 paths - Defence (AUKUS) or nuclear research/medicine (Lucas Heights). Or maybe, it might a ticket to go to another country and join their nuclear industry*.
I am choosing the direction of AUKUS because, prior, I wanted to serve the country by joining the Army but was denied the previous few attempts due to medical concerns. Undeterred, I still want to serve the Country and that’s when AUKUS was announced - almost a Deus-Machina. Naturally, Defence industry became the next best path.
I am holding out that Australia will have an energy policy change at the State and Federal levels, of which production of electricity using nuclear energy will become a reality. If so, I hope to be in an excellent position to be at the forefront of in the energy sector for nuclear.
Only time will tell.
Thank you all for reading this, hope to see you in the next post.
Steve Frampton.
*I prefer to stay in Australia because it is my home. For everything this Country has given me, I want to return it in kind and make it better.
